chattanooga activities for kids

The 4th of July is filled with fireworks, cookouts and fun. The celebrations can also come with hazards that are especially dangerous to children. Keep your children safe this Independence Day with these tips.

  • With an abundance of fireworks and backyard bonfires, fires frequently occur over the July Fourth holiday. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby to quickly put out any accidental fires. It is also a good idea to have a bucket of water and hose nearby in case an accidental fire spreads rapidly out of control.
  • Decorations are festive and a fun addition to holiday gatherings. However, their small parts can make them a danger to young children. When decorating for the holidays, be sure to keep décor out of the reach of curious hands.
  • When lighting fireworks be sure to do so in an open area away from people. Fireworks should only be used in a space free of bushes, dry grass, flammable materials and other hazardous materials.
  • Light fireworks away from others in case they backfire or launch into an unexpected direction. You should also never relight a defective firework. Make certain that sparklers and other fireworks have completely cooled before discarding them.
  • Keep candles, adult beverages and fireworks out of the reach of small children. Eliminating safety hazards is the main way to prevent accidental injury.
  • If you and your family are planning to celebrate the holiday at a crowded event, determine a meeting place in the event someone gets separated from the group. Discuss with your children before the gathering what to do if the situation arises.
  • Grilled meats and veggies are one of the best parts of a summer cookout. However, grills can be dangerous to children. Do not allow your children to be near a grill when it is on. Be certain your grill is in proper working order before firing it up for dinner.
