Prevent Allergy Symptoms For Your Kids
It’s that time of year again. The sun is shining brighter, the temperature is starting to rise, and, everywhere you look, plants are starting to bloom. While Spring is one of the most popular seasons, it also brings about seasonal allergies. Here at NiteOwl Pediatrics, we want to make sure that all of the parents that entrust their little one’s health to us are aware of a few tips that can help make sure that your child makes it through allergy season without succumbing to those horrible allergy symptoms. Below, we have listed out a few techniques you can use to make sure that your child enjoys Spring to the fullest!
- Stay Hydrated: Remember, people are basically house plants with more complicated emotions. As such, you should encourage your child to drink plenty of water this allergy season. All that sneezing and blowing of the nose can do a number on your child’s fluid levels, meaning that they need to be sure to take in as much as they lose in order to keep that nasty pollen from latching on harder.
- Cold Compress: Itchy eyes are one of the worst allergy symptoms out there and, for small children, this symptom can be almost unbearable. If your child is suffering from itchy eyes, we suggest that you use a cold compress (such as a cold, damp washcloth or a cold compress pack) to relieve their itchy eyes. Even a few minutes of this technique can go a long way in helping your child feel better!
- Protect Your Home: Even though it can feel amazing to open up the windows of your home and let that wonderful Spring air waft in, doing so can actually turn your home into a haven for pollen. If you want to reduce the amount of pollen that makes its way into your home, make sure to keep your windows and doors shut as much as possible.
- Saline Rinse: This is a technique that we only suggest be used for older children because, well, it feels a bit weird. Neti pots can be purchased at most major pharmacies and grocery stores and are an excellent tool for nasal saline irrigation. To put it simply, the neti pot flushes the sinus cavity with a saline solution (salt water) to help flush out pollen and mucus and relieve sinus irritation.
We hope that you find these tips helpful and that you are able to help your child avoid the symptoms that are so often attributed to seasonal allergies.
