seasonal allergies in childrenAdults are not the only people suffering from allergies this season. Hay fever, or allergic rhinitis, is a common issue facing many infants and children. Most children suffering from hay fever experience a runny or stuffy nose, clear drainage, sneezing, itchy nose, sore throat and cough. For many allergy suffers, their symptoms are the worst when exposed to allergens such as tree pollen, grasses and weeds. Children can develop seasonal allergies at any point. In most cases children develop the allergies by age 10 and the symptoms reach their peak by early to mid twenties.

If your child’s “cold” occurs around the same time each year, then most likely allergies are to blame. With allergies, the onset is usually rather sudden and will last through the duration of that particular allergen season. In addition to the typical symptoms, many children also suffer from itchy, watery, red eyes. If your child also suffers from wheezing or shortness of breath, it is possible that they have developed asthma.

Children with uncontrolled allergies are at a higher risk for developing a sinus infection, ear infection and asthma complications. While there is no cure for seasonal allergies, there are a few things you can do to help limit exposure to the allergens. Keep the windows in the car and home closed to avoid breathing in more of the allergen than necessary. For milder symptoms and discomfort, over the counter decongestants, steroids and antihistamines can be used as needed. Be cautious when giving your children antihistamines as they can cause drowsiness and result in poor performance in the classroom.

For medicine to be most effective, it should be taken daily. The medicines will not be as effective when taken on an as needed basis and it is best to start the medication before the season starts. If your child is still suffering from allergies while taking the medications properly, a trip to the allergy specialist may be in order.
